 In Blog

If you have been into our studio, RYK Yoga and Meditation Center, and spent time perusing the various health products we sell, you may have come across a tongue scraper and had your curiosity spiked regarding its uses and benefits. When it comes to your daily morning routine, while brushing and flossing are essential, tongue scraping can bring many added benefits to your health and only takes a minute.

In Ayurveda, the most ancient system of medicine filled with practices and traditions, tongue scraping is a sacred self-care ritual. By scraping your tongue in the morning you are removing bacteria, food debris, toxins, fungi and dead cells from the tongue’s surface.

Not only can tongue scraping boost your body’s immune function, but it can also promote better dental health, proper digestion, and good smelling breath. By removing the bacteria and toxins that can live on your tongue, you are improving your oral health immensely. When you clean your tongue with this scraper you also stimulate your internal organs.

If you are interested in this incorporating this Ayurvedic practice into your daily morning routine, this is how you do it properly. Every morning, with an empty stomach, you will want to scrape your tongue. With both ends of the tongue scraper gripped in both hands, stick out your tongue and begin scraping as far back on your tongue as you can. Scrape with gentle pressure, and be sure to rinse the scraper between strokes, repeating this process for 10 times.

In our RYK store, we do have tongue scrapers available for purchase! Please stop by anytime to pick one up or ask us any questions you have regarding this practice.
